“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.”
For the 1,100 fortunate dogs that have been rescued by Sasha Pesic, their lives have indeed been changed for the better.
Want to know more about this kind hearted guy and how did he started?
Here’s his story…
Sasha Pesic started his shelter – Sasha’s Shelter in 2008 when he was on his way home in the Serbian city of Nis whereby he found four abandoned puppies by chance. This helpless sight prompted him to start his plan to rescue and help the abandoned without any financial support.
With the help of 6 other volunteers as well as donations, contributions which he received from kind-hearted souls worldwide, Sasha’s Shelter began by providing home, medication and food to all abandoned and abused dogs.
Besides providing the necessary, all the rescues were vaccinated, sterilized and even given an identification microchip. The extent of Sasha’s dedication can be seen by the effort he took to remember all the dogs’ names!
Out of the 1,100 dogs that he has rescued so far, approximately 400 have been happily adopted by kind-hearted souls from all over the world. When Sasha’s Shelter was opened in 2008, he did not expect it to be overcrowded and “overcrowded” means that over 750 dogs are currently living in his shelter. However, without any government support and having to cover veterinary treatments, living expenses and everything necessary out from his own pocket or from donation proceeds, the current shelter is the best that he can do.
In his recent interview with BoredPanda, Sasha revealed: “The problem here is in the system and the institutions that should be taking care of this. They are broken and corrupted and cause even more damage rather than actually helping the situation.”
“The other problem is in the irresponsibility of the owners who don’t neuter their dogs and leave them outside when they don’t want them anymore. Reasons vary from ‘I got a baby and I can’t take care of the dog’ to ‘I don’t need it anymore.’”
“There is confusion and carelessness towards animals here that causes a lot of problems of these kinds.”
This is why we should never abandon our dogs and it is important to spread the awareness to advocate for dog rescue and dog adoption.

“A dog is not a thing. A thing is replaceable. A dog is not. A thing is disposable. A dog is not. A thing doesn’t have a heart. A dog’s heart is bigger than any “thing” you can ever own.”
